Nollywood actress Toyin Abraham has faced significant backlash on social media after taking legal action against trolls who cursed her for supporting President Bola Tinubu during the 2023 general election.

Abraham, a vocal supporter of Tinubu, had assured her fans that the President’s “Renewed Hope” action plans would address some of Nigeria’s pressing issues.

However, since Tinubu’s inauguration on May 29, 2023, the country’s economy has taken a downturn, with the removal of fuel subsidies and the floating of the naira leading to a sharp rise in the cost of living.

As a result, netizens have directed their frustrations towards Toyin Abraham, expecting her to explain how Tinubu intends to address the country’s problems. When Abraham stated that she has moved on to focus on her acting career and is not in government or politics, she was met with even harsher criticism.

One user, who identified as #Ayo, accused Toyin Abraham of using Tinubu’s money to fund a hair transplant for her husband. In response, Abraham reported the user to the police for cyberbullying, and he was subsequently arrested.

This action led to further backlash, with another user, Ajebo Danny, calling on the public to report Abraham’s movies on Netflix if the arrested troll is not released. Another user, Bayo Otedola, even tagged Elon Musk, the CEO of Twitter, asking him to intervene and protect free speech.

Abraham has defended her decision to report the trolls, stating that she can accept abuse and insults directed at her, but she will not tolerate threats and curses against her family. She maintains that her report to the cybercrime unit was a legitimate response to the threats and cyberbullying she faced.

The ongoing controversy highlights the polarized political landscape in Nigeria and the challenges faced by public figures who openly support political candidates. As the country’s economic woes continue, the backlash against Abraham serves as a cautionary tale for celebrities who choose to engage in the political arena.
