ASUU Issues 21-Day Strike Notice to Federal Government
The Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) has informed the federal government of its plans to embark on a fresh nationwide strike. Sources within the national executive council (NEC) of the union confirmed the development after a NEC meeting held at the University of Ibadan (UI) on Monday.
ASUU has issued a 21-day notice to the federal government, which will be transmitted to the labour and education ministries. The union clarified that this is not an ultimatum but a strike notice, as required by labour laws.
The decision to issue the strike notice comes after ASUU joined the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) and the Trade Union Congress (TUC) in an indefinite nationwide strike over minimum wage and hiked electricity tariffs in June 2024.
Despite a meeting with the minister of education, Tahir Mamman, where agreements were reached, ASUU’s national president, Emmanuel Osodeke, revealed that these agreements had not been implemented.
Public universities in Nigeria have been plagued by strikes in the last decade, with ASUU embarking on its 16th strike in 23 years in 2022. The union’s actions are aimed at addressing issues related to remuneration for lecturers and the provision of infrastructure on campuses.
As the 21-day notice period begins, stakeholders in the education sector await further developments and hope for a resolution that will ensure the smooth running of universities and the uninterrupted education of students.
