CNN producer Don Lemon “caught on hot mic” commenting on Maxine Waters is False?
CNN producer Don Lemon “caught on hot mic” commenting on Maxine Waters’ “wig problem.”
The Instagram video claiming that a CNN producer was caught on a hot mic dealing with Maxine Waters’ wig problem during a recent interview is false and misleading. The video is an edited mashup that combines an old clip of Don Lemon laughing with a separate interview of Waters adjusting her hair.
In the original 2018 clip, CNN producer Don Lemon was actually chuckling after political commentator Symone Sanders-Townsend made a humorous remark about former Trump administration official Omarosa Manigault Newman. Lemon, who was fired from CNN in 2023 after a divisive run on the network’s morning show, was not involved in the Waters interview.
The Waters interview took place on July 9, 2024, during an appearance on “CNN NewsNight” with anchor Abby Phillip. As Phillip asked Waters about Democratic strategy for the 2024 election, the 85-year-old congresswoman briefly adjusted her wig before answering the question.
The Instagram video falsely implies that a CNN producer was caught on a hot mic making a comment about Waters’ wig, but the voice-over is actually from a separate account, @stevenvoiceover. The video’s claim that a producer was caught on a hot mic is completely fabricated.
While Waters’ wig adjustment during the interview went viral on social media, the edited video attempting to portray it as a humorous incident involving Lemon is simply not true. It’s important to fact-check claims and not spread misinformation, even if it seems entertaining or plausible at first glance.
