Coach Sean Payton is cautious of rookie Bo Nix as the starter
Denver Broncos coach Sean Payton is taking a cautious approach regarding the naming of rookie quarterback Bo Nix as the starter, despite Nix’s impressive performance in his first NFL start.
Following a dominant 27-2 victory over the Green Bay Packers’ reserves on Sunday night, Payton acknowledged Bo Nix strong showing but refrained from making any announcements about the starting position.
Nix, the former Oregon standout and the sixth quarterback selected in the 2024 NFL Draft, led the Broncos to scores on both of his drives, bringing his preseason tally to six scores in seven drives.
He completed 8 of 9 passes for 90 yards, including a 2-yard touchdown pass to Tim Patrick, marking Patrick’s first touchdown in 974 days after missing the last two seasons due to leg injuries.
Bo Nix also had a 14-yard touchdown pass to Javonte Williams that was overturned upon review, as he was ruled to have crossed the line of scrimmage when he threw.
Denver improved to 2-0 in the preseason, with all three quarterbacks contributing to the scoring. Nix’s performance raised questions about his potential as the starter, but he remained humble, stating, “That’s not for me to decide,” when asked if he felt he had done enough to earn the position.
Payton praised Nix’s poise and decision-making, noting, “He had the one penalty which was right on the line. It was tough… You feel his comfort level as he continues to get used to the calls coming in.” Nix’s ability to manage the game effectively was evident, as he showcased his accuracy and field vision throughout the night.
Jarrett Stidham, who started the previous game against the Indianapolis Colts, entered the game in the second quarter and completed 7 of 11 passes for 65 yards, adding a 9-yard touchdown run just before halftime. Stidham’s performance solidified his position as Nix’s primary backup, even as the competition for the starting role intensifies.
The Broncos’ defense also shined, limiting the Packers to just 10 first downs and 168 total yards. Notable plays included a 56-yard interception return by safety Keidron Smith and a third-down sack by defensive end Zach Allen. The Broncos’ defense held the Packers to a dismal 3 of 13 on third down and 0 for 3 on fourth down attempts.
In a notable rule change, the Broncos executed the first post-safety kickoff under new NFL regulations, which allowed kicker Wil Lutz to use a tee that was previously prohibited. Lutz’s kickoff from the 20-yard line reached the Green Bay 2, but the new rule may diminish the field position advantage typically gained after a safety.
Injuries marred the game, with Packers linebacker Ralen Goforth suffering a concussion on Stidham’s touchdown play. Broncos linebacker Jonas Griffith also sustained a shoulder injury but managed to return to the field.
As the Broncos continue their preseason campaign, the competition for the starting quarterback position remains fierce, with Nix’s performance making a strong case for him to lead the team into the regular season.
