French Football Federation Files Complaint Over Racist Remarks by Argentina Players

The French Football Federation (FFF) has filed a formal complaint with FIFA regarding “racist and discriminatory comments” made by Argentina players towards their French counterparts following Argentina’s victory in the 2022 Copa América tournament.

The controversy stemmed from a video shared on social media by Argentina midfielder Enzo Fernandez, which depicted Argentine players engaging in chants targeting French players of African descent. This incident was strongly condemned by France defender Wesley Fofana, who has roots in Ivory Coast and plays for Chelsea, as “unrestrained racism.”

Similar discriminatory chants directed at French players of African heritage were heard before the 2022 World Cup final between France and Argentina, which Argentina won. The FFF has consistently taken a firm stance against such behavior, emphasizing that it contradicts the principles of sportsmanship and human rights.

FFF president Philippe Diallo, who is also a prominent figure in European soccer politics as a member of UEFA’s executive committee, expressed his disapproval of the unacceptable acts of racism. Diallo stressed the need to uphold respect and equality in sports.

FIFA President Gianni Infantino has previously reiterated the organization’s zero-tolerance policy towards racism in soccer and has committed to reestablishing a task force to address such incidents. The FFF’s complaint is part of ongoing efforts within the football community to combat discrimination and promote inclusivity in the sport.

The incident has drawn widespread attention and condemnation, with many calling for strong action to be taken against the perpetrators. The case highlights the persistent problem of racism in soccer and the need for continued vigilance and education to eradicate such behavior from the game.

As the complaint proceeds through FIFA’s disciplinary channels, the French football community remains steadfast in its commitment to promoting diversity, respect, and fair play on and off the pitch. The outcome of the case will be closely watched as a test of FIFA’s resolve in addressing racism in international football.
