Disgraced Former Congressman George Santos Pleads Guilty to Wire Fraud and Identity Theft

George Santos, the former Republican congressman from New York’s 3rd district, has pleaded guilty to wire fraud and aggravated identity theft charges as part of a plea deal with federal prosecutors.

Santos, who was expelled from Congress last December, faced a total of 23 felony charges including defrauding campaign donors, falsifying campaign finance reports, and lying to Congress about his financial situation.

Under the plea agreement, Santos will face a mandatory minimum sentence of two years in prison, with federal guidelines suggesting a likely sentence of six to eight years. He has also agreed to pay nearly $374,000 in restitution.

Santos’ guilty plea comes just weeks before his trial was set to begin in September. The charges stem from allegations that he stole donors’ identities, made unauthorized charges on their credit cards, and used campaign funds for personal expenses such as designer clothing and Botox injections.

“I deeply regret my conduct and the harm it has caused and accept full responsibility for my actions,” Santos said in court, speaking in a shaky voice.

Santos’ downfall began shortly after he flipped a swing district in the 2022 midterm elections, becoming the first openly gay non-incumbent Republican to win a seat in Congress. Reports soon surfaced alleging that he had fabricated key details of his biography, including claims of employment at prestigious Wall Street firms and a family business with $80 million in assets.

The House voted overwhelmingly to expel Santos in December 2023 following an Ethics Committee report that found “substantial evidence” he had committed federal crimes and misused his position for personal gain. He is one of only five members of Congress to be expelled in U.S. history.

Despite maintaining his innocence for months, Santos indicated in a December interview that a plea deal was “not off the table”. His guilty plea comes as a surprise to many, as he had previously pleaded not guilty to the charges.

With his sentencing scheduled for February 7, 2025, Santos faces a long road ahead as he prepares to serve time in prison for his crimes. The disgraced former congressman’s fall from grace serves as a cautionary tale about the consequences of political corruption and the importance of holding elected officials accountable for their actions.
