Kamala Harris Comprehensive Biography
Early Life and Education
Kamala Devi Harris was born on October 20, 1964, in Oakland, California, to Shyamala Gopalan, a cancer researcher from India, and Donald Harris, an economics professor from Jamaica. Her multicultural background shaped her outlook, giving her a deep understanding of social justice and civil rights. Raised by her mother after her parents’ divorce, Harris often cites her mother as her greatest influence, particularly in her dedication to community and social service.
Growing up in Berkeley, Kamala attended Thousand Oaks Elementary School, a school known for its participation in the Berkeley desegregation busing program. She continued her education at Howard University, a historically Black university in Washington, D.C., where she majored in political science and economics.
At Howard, she engaged in various leadership roles and community service projects, experiences that deepened her commitment to civic duty. After Howard, Harris attended the University of California, Hastings College of the Law, where she earned her Juris Doctor in 1989 and was admitted to the California Bar the following year.
Legal and Political Career
Kamala Harris began her legal career in the Alameda County District Attorney’s Office, where she gained a reputation as a determined prosecutor. She later moved to the San Francisco District Attorney’s Office, where she served as the head of the Career Criminal Unit.
In 2004, Harris was elected as the District Attorney of San Francisco, making her the first woman and first Black person to hold the position. Her tenure was marked by both achievements and controversies, as she pursued policies focused on fighting crime while also introducing initiatives to reduce recidivism among low-level offenders.
In 2010, Harris was elected Attorney General of California, becoming the first woman, first African American, and first South Asian American to serve in the role. Her time as attorney general was characterized by significant efforts to reform California’s criminal justice system, though she faced criticism for certain stances, such as her refusal to support Proposition 47, a measure to reduce certain nonviolent felonies to misdemeanours. However, Harris gained nationwide attention for her leadership on cases against major corporations, including a notable $25 billion settlement for California homeowners affected by the foreclosure crisis.
U.S. Senate
In 2016, Kamala Harris won a seat in the U.S. Senate, representing California. As a senator, she focused on issues including healthcare reform, environmental protection, and criminal justice reform.
Harris quickly gained a reputation for her incisive questioning in Senate hearings, particularly during the hearings for Supreme Court Justice Brett Kavanaugh and former Attorney General Jeff Sessions. Her work in the Senate underscored her commitment to civil rights and social equity, with a legislative focus on progressive policies.
Vice Presidency
In 2020, Joe Biden selected Kamala Harris as his vice-presidential running mate, making her the first Black and South Asian woman on a major party’s presidential ticket. The Biden-Harris ticket won the election, and she was sworn in on January 20, 2021, as the 49th Vice President of the United States.
As vice president, Harris has continued to champion issues such as immigration reform, public health, and economic recovery. She has worked closely with the Biden administration on managing the COVID-19 pandemic, addressing climate change, and advocating for workers’ rights and voting rights.
