Sleep disorder is a very popular health issue that many go through and there are many potential causes that can lead to it.
However, the specific cause can vary depending on the type of disorder that one is experiencing. Below I have listed some;
Common causes of sleep disorders
1. Medical conditions
Certain medical conditions, such as chronic pain, heart disease, and respiratory disorders which are generally discomforting, can also lead to sleep disorder.
2. Stress and anxiety
Chronic stress and anxiety is something to watch out for, because it can interfere with the body’s natural sleep-wake cycle, thereby leading to difficulty falling or staying asleep.
Some medications, such as certain antidepressants and beta-blockers, can cause sleep disturbances. Always consult your health practitioner for advice when using any of these drugs and having difficulty sleeping.
4. Substance abuse
Alcohol abuse and illegal drug use can interfere with a person’s normal sleep patterns and lead to sleep disorders.
Ageing is a natural process, However, as we age, our bodies undergo changes that can affect sleep quality. These can in many cases make it difficult to sleep easily or to even be able to sleep for long.
6. Poor sleep habits
Not having a proper sleep schedule can make it difficult for your system to help you fall asleep easily.
Irregular sleep schedules, sleeping in an uncomfortable environment, and excessive caffeine consumption can all disrupt your sleep and lead to sleep disorders.
7. Sleep-related disorders
If you suffer from any of these conditions, such as sleep apnea and restless leg syndrome, it can lead to disruptions to your sleep pattern and lead to sleep disorders.
8. Working on a shift
This is not a medical condition but rather a lifestyle that can lead to a sleep disorder.
Working irregular or overnight shifts can disrupt the body’s natural sleep-wake cycle.
With all the above mentioned causes of sleep disorder, I have also decided to write about;
Remedies of sleep disorder
1. Develop a sleep schedule
Try to develop a pattern that works for you, whereby you will be able to go to bed and wake up at the same time every other day, even during the weekends.
This strategy has shown to be very effective, because it conditions your body system to know when to start winding down for the day.
2. Create a relaxing bedtime routine
Engage in activities that help you relax before bed, such as reading or listening to calming music.
When you adopt these simple habits, it will help you to achieve a calm state first and then from that state you can easily fall asleep.
3. Make your sleep environment comfortable
Keep your bedroom dark, quiet, and at a comfortable temperature.
This is a very crucial strategy that many people ignore when they bring work into their bedrooms or make the bedroom very busy.
These activities take away the calming and conducive state that it is supposed to have to be able to prepare you for sleep.
4. Avoid stimulating activities before bed
Avoid screens (e.g., television, computer, phone) and strenuous exercise close to bedtime.
That is why it is important not to have a television in your bedroom or take your phones to bed.
5. Avoid caffeine and alcohol
Many people take caffeine drinks to keep them energized during the day, which is a job that it does well.
So if you are looking to sleep easily and not suffer from a sleep disorder, then stay away from it during the periods of going to sleep.
Both of these substances can disrupt sleep. It’s best to avoid them, especially in the hours leading up to bedtime.
6. Try relaxation techniques
If you are experiencing a sleep disorder, you can simply practice some relaxation techniques such as deep breathing, meditation, and yoga. These techniques can help relax the mind and body and prepare you for sleep.
If these strategies do not improve your sleep, it may be helpful to see a healthcare professional for further evaluation and treatment.
Sleep disorders can have serious consequences on your health, so it’s important to address them as soon as possible.
