Former U.S. President Jimmy Carter, the longest-lived president in American history, has entered hospice care at his home in Plains, Georgia at the age of 99.

Carter’s nonprofit organization, The Carter Center, made the announcement on Saturday, June 24th, 2024, stating that the former president has decided to forgo further medical intervention and instead focus on comfort care.

Carter, who served as the 39th President of the United States from 1977 to 1981, has faced numerous health challenges in recent years, including several falls, a cancer diagnosis in 2015, and more recently, a hip replacement surgery in 2019.

Despite these setbacks, Carter has remained active in his humanitarian work and advocacy for global peace and democracy through The Carter Center.

The decision to enter hospice care comes as Carter and his family have determined that his advanced age and declining health make further medical treatment futile.

In a statement, The Carter Center said, “President Carter has the full support of his family and his medical team. The Carter family asks for privacy during this time and is grateful for the concern shown by his many admirers.”

Throughout his post-presidency, Carter has been widely respected for his tireless efforts to promote human rights, resolve conflicts, and monitor elections around the world.

He was awarded the Nobel Peace Prize in 2002 for his decades of untiring efforts towards finding peaceful solutions to international conflicts, advancing democracy and human rights, and promoting economic and social development.

As news of Carter’s transition to hospice care spreads, tributes and well-wishes have poured in from former presidents, world leaders, and the American public. Many have praised Carter’s unwavering commitment to public service, his moral leadership, and his enduring legacy as a champion of peace and human rights.

In his final days, Carter will be surrounded by his family and loved ones, including his wife of over 75 years, Rosalynn Carter. The Carter family has expressed gratitude for the outpouring of support and has asked for privacy as they navigate this difficult time.

The nation and the world await with heavy hearts the passing of this remarkable statesman, whose life and work have left an indelible mark on the global community. Jimmy Carter’s legacy as a humanitarian, peacemaker, and dedicated public servant will continue to inspire generations to come.
