UN Condemns Hijab Crackdown in Iran and the on going Executions
A new United Nations report has condemned the Iranian government’s violent hijab crackdown on protests, including the execution of protesters and the forced removal of women’s hijabs.
The report, released by the UN’s Special Rapporteur on the situation of human rights in Iran, Javaid Rehman, details the Iranian authorities’ use of lethal force against protesters, arbitrary arrests, and the execution of at least 100 individuals since the start of the protests in September 2022.
The report states that the Iranian government has carried out a “widespread and systematic attack against the Iranian people” in response to the protests, which were sparked by the death of 22-year-old Mahsa Amini in police custody. Amini was arrested by Iran’s morality police for allegedly violating the country’s strict hijab laws.
The report also condemns the Iranian government’s forced removal of women’s hijabs, describing it as a “systematic violation of the right to freedom of expression and the right to privacy.” The report states that security forces have violently removed women’s hijabs in public, leading to numerous injuries and arrests.
The UN Special Rapporteur has called on the Iranian government to immediately cease the use of lethal force against protesters, release all arbitrarily detained individuals, and respect the rights to freedom of expression, association, and peaceful assembly.
The report’s findings echo the widespread international condemnation of Iran’s hijab crackdown on the protests. Several countries have imposed sanctions on Iranian officials and entities responsible for the violence, and the UN Human Rights Council has established an independent investigation into the situation in Iran.
The ongoing protests in Iran, which have lasted for over nine months, have posed a significant challenge to the Iranian government’s authority. The regime’s violent response has drawn widespread criticism and calls for accountability from the international community.
