Aileen Cannon Urged to Step Down from Donald Trump Case
Two Federal Judges have asked Aileen Cannon Urged to Step Down from former president Donald Trump’s Case
Two federal judges in South Florida advised District Judge Aileen Cannon to forgo overseeing the criminal prosecution of former President Donald Trump when she initially took on the classified documents case in 2023, according to a report from The New York Times.
The judges, including Chief Judge Cecilia M. Altonaga, suggested that Cannon recuse herself from the case led by special counsel Jack Smith and allow another judge to take charge instead.
The two judges urged Cannon to step down from the case, citing concerns about her handling of the lawsuit Trump filed against the FBI’s search of his Mar-a-Lago residence in August 2022.
Critics argue that Cannon has slowed the progress of the case to a near standstill, making a pre-election trial an impossibility. Her approach has raised eyebrows among legal scholars.
Lawyers who have appeared before Cannon have noted that she tends to focus on irrelevant legal issues, which can detract from the core matters at hand. This includes a longshot motion from the former president to invalidate Jack Smith’s appointment as special counsel.
The lawyers also reported a rigid stance on any technical defects in filings and a struggle with managing the docket, leading to pretrial disputes that other judges would resolve in a matter of weeks going unresolved for months.
Despite the advice, Cannon continues to oversee the case, which has seen numerous delays and is yet to be scheduled for trial.
