Early Life and Education

Jeffrey Preston Bezos was born on January 12, 1964, in Albuquerque, New Mexico, to Jacklyn and Ted Jorgensen. His parents divorced when he was young, and his mother later remarried Miguel Bezos, who legally adopted Jeff. From an early age, Bezos showed a keen interest in science and technology. He graduated as valedictorian from Miami Palmetto Senior High School in 1982.

Bezos attended Princeton University, where he studied electrical engineering and computer science. He graduated summa cum laude in 1986, and during his time at Princeton, he was a member of the Phi Beta Kappa Society.

Early Career of Jeff Bezos

After graduating, Bezos worked on Wall Street, initially at Fitel, a fintech telecommunications start-up, and then at Bankers Trust. He later joined D. E. Shaw & Co., a quantitative hedge fund, where he became the youngest senior vice president in the company’s history.

In 1994, Bezos left his lucrative job at D. E. Shaw to pursue his entrepreneurial vision. He drove with his wife, MacKenzie, from New York to Seattle, drafting the business plan for what would become Amazon.com along the way.
