After a successful 15-year NBA playing career and an equally prominent post-retirement role as a popular podcast host, JJ Redick is embarking on a new chapter – becoming the head coach of the Los Angeles Lakers.

Redick, 39, was officially introduced as the Lakers’ new head coach on June 26th, 2024, replacing the recently fired Darvin Ham. The former sharpshooter acknowledged his lack of coaching experience, but expressed confidence in his ability to lead one of the league’s most storied franchises.

“I know I’m not the typical head coaching candidate,” Redick said during his introductory press conference. “But I believe my unique perspective as a player, broadcaster, and podcaster will allow me to connect with our players in a meaningful way and help us achieve our ultimate goal – winning a championship.”

Redick’s appointment comes at a critical juncture for the Lakers, who are looking to bounce back from a disappointing 2023-24 season that saw them miss the playoffs.

The team’s two superstars, LeBron James and Anthony Davis, have publicly endorsed the hiring, with Davis expressing excitement about Redick’s vision for the team.

“JJ has a great basketball mind, and he’s not afraid to challenge us,” Davis said. “He wants us to play a certain way, and I’m looking forward to buying into his system and seeing how it can take us to the next level.”

One of Redick’s key priorities will be maximizing the production of James and Davis, who have struggled with injuries and inconsistency in recent years. Redick plans to have James, a career 34.5% three-point shooter, take more shots from beyond the arc, while also utilizing Davis’ versatility as a “hub” in the offense.

The new Lakers coach acknowledged the steep learning curve he faces, but emphasized his willingness to lean on his experienced assistants and the team’s veteran leadership.

“I may not have the traditional coaching pedigree, but I’ve been around the game my entire life,” Redick said. “I’m ready to put in the work and prove that I can be a successful head coach in this league.”

As Redick transitions from the broadcast booth to the sidelines, Lakers fans and the NBA community at large will be closely watching to see if the former sharpshooter can translate his basketball IQ and communication skills into a successful coaching tenure.

The pressure will be high, but Redick appears eager to embrace the challenge and lead the Lakers back to championship contention.
