NHL: Markstrom traded to Devils for 1st-round draft pick, Kevin Bahl
The Calgary Flames have traded veteran goaltender Jacob Markstrom to the New Jersey Devils in exchange for a top-10 protected first-round pick in the 2025 NHL Draft and defenseman Kevin Bahl.
Markstrom, a 34-year-old netminder, recorded 23 wins, 23 losses, and 2 draws in 48 games this season, with a goals-against average of 2.78 and a save percentage of .905. He has two seasons left on a six-year contract, which will expire after the 2025-26 season, making him an impending free agent.
Markstrom expressed uncertainty about his future with the Flames following their failure to secure a spot in the Stanley Cup Playoffs. He stated, “I don’t know, but what I do know is that I love winning hockey games. I think that’s the competitive side of me… I urge and want to accomplish that every time I lace up the skates. We all want to win hockey games in that locker room.”
Originally drafted by the Florida Panthers in the second round (No. 31) of the 2008 NHL Draft, Markstrom has amassed a career record of 215-196-57, along with a 2.73 goals-against average and a .909 save percentage in 485 regular-season games (468 starts) for the Flames, Vancouver Canucks, and Panthers. He has also notched 13 wins, a 2.90 goals-against average, and a .911 save percentage in 26 playoff games.
The first-round pick in the trade is protected if it falls within the top 10 selections in the 2026 NHL Draft. If the Devils secure a top-10 pick next year, Calgary will receive their first-round pick instead.
Kevin Bahl, a 23-year-old defenseman, played all 82 games for the Devils this season and contributed 11 points (one goal, 10 assists). In his NHL career, he has accumulated 25 points (four goals, 21 assists) in 148 regular-season games and one assist in 11 playoff games.
