Ohio Sees Rise in COVID-19 Cases, Experts Urge Precautions
Ohio has recently experienced a 27% rise in COVID-19 cases compared to a few weeks ago, according to the Ohio Department of Health.
The current statewide case count stands at just above 3.7 million.Joseph Khabbaza, a physician at the Cleveland Clinic, noted that while the rise in cases is noticeable, the initial base number was relatively low, so the community shouldn’t be overly concerned.
However, he emphasized that COVID-19 is still a challenging infection to navigate, with an average of one to two patients per day in the outpatient setting.Infectious disease researcher Mark Cameron from Case Western Reserve University attributed the spike to increased travel and large gatherings during the summer months.
He explained that new variants or infections can be introduced by people traveling from other countries and then spreading at events like festivals and concerts.
While these summer numbers may not be a significant concern, Cameron warned that they could foreshadow what the community might see later in the year, particularly with the upcoming cold and flu season.
To protect against the current wave of cases, the CDC recommends:
Getting the latest COVID-19 booster shot, which covers all new variants and mutations
Maintaining good surface and hand hygiene, including washing hands for at least 20 seconds and disinfecting counters and tables
Getting tested, as COVID-19 variants can often be mistaken for a cold or the flu
Wearing masks when out or attending gatherings
Experts emphasize the importance of following these guidelines and staying vigilant as the community navigates the evolving COVID-19 landscape.
By taking proactive measures, Ohioans can help mitigate the spread of the virus and protect themselves and their loved ones.
