Over 60 Ice Cream Products Recalled Due to Listeria Contamination Risk

As summer temperatures soar, a major ice cream recall has been issued due to potential listeria contamination.

Totally Cool Inc., a Maryland-based food producer, has recalled over 60 ice cream products across popular brands including Hershey’s, Friendly’s, Chipwich, and Jeni’s.

The affected items range from pints of ice cream and sorbet to ice cream cakes, sandwiches, cones, and more. The recall was initiated after the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) discovered listeria, a dangerous bacteria, during routine sampling at Totally Cool’s production facility in Owings Mills, Maryland.

Fortunately, no illnesses have been reported so far in connection with the contaminated products. Upon learning of the listeria findings, Totally Cool immediately ceased production and distribution of the implicated items. The company is actively investigating the source of the listeria and has implemented precautionary measures

Consumers are advised to check the date and plant codes on recalled ice cream products and return them to the place of purchase for a full refund. Only the specific items listed in the recall are affected – no other Totally Cool products are involved.

Chipwich, a subsidiary of Crave Better Foods LLC, clarified that they operate a separate production line within the same Maryland facility as Totally Cool. The company expressed regret over the recall, stating it was a precautionary step to ensure consumer safety.

Hershey’s Ice Cream, another affected brand, has ceased sales of potentially contaminated products in response to the recall initiated by their manufacturing partner, Totally Cool. Individuals and retailers are urged to discard any possibly tainted items.

Listeria monocytogenes poses serious health risks, particularly to vulnerable populations such as young children, the elderly, pregnant women, and those with weakened immune systems.

Pregnant women infected with listeria face an increased risk of miscarriage or stillbirth. Symptoms in healthy individuals may include fever, headache, stiffness, nausea, abdominal pain, and diarrhea.

According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), approximately 1,600 people contract listeriosis annually in the United States, with an estimated 260 fatalities.

The recall serves as a reminder of the importance of food safety and the need for vigilance in the face of potential contamination risks.
