Simone Biles Leads Day 1 of U.S. Olympic Gymnastics Trials as Injuries Rock Team USA

Simone Biles is on the verge of securing her spot on the Olympic team for the third time, currently leading her teammate Jordan Chiles by 2.5 points, with Suni Lee, the reigning Olympic all-around champion, in third place.

However, the selection of the women’s gymnastics team for the Paris Olympics faces challenges as three top contenders sustained injuries before the Friday competition.

Kay DiCello and Shilese Jones both suffered injuries, with Jones managing to compete on the uneven bars despite being injured, but ultimately having to withdraw from the rest of the meet due to her injuries.

Skye Blakely, another hopeful, suffered a season-ending Achilles rupture during training. The selection rules do not allow injured athletes to petition for a spot on the Olympic team.

In a surprising twist, Biles found herself trailing Leanne Wong after the first half of the competition, with Wong impressing with a new vault upgrade. However, Biles reclaimed the lead with a stellar performance on the floor and a remarkable Yurchenko double pike vault, earning the highest score of the night.

Suni Lee also showcased her readiness for Paris with a strong bars routine, demonstrating high difficulty skills that the selection committee will surely take note of.

The competition will determine the top all-around finisher with an automatic spot on the team, while the remaining team members will be selected based on a combination of trial results and past performances.

Fans can catch all the action on Peacock, starting with the Opening Ceremony on 26 at 12 p.m ET. Additionally, the trials will be broadcast live on NBC and Peacock until Sunday, where the final team and alternates for the 2024 Paris Olympics will be announced.
