Snapchat Settles Discrimination Lawsuit for $15 Million
Social media giant Snapchat Inc. has agreed to pay $15 million to settle a lawsuit filed by California’s civil rights agency. The lawsuit alleged gender discrimination, failure to prevent sexual harassment, and retaliation against female employees who spoke up.
This settlement covers California-based female employees from 2014 to 2024. While the company maintains its innocence, it chose to settle to avoid a lengthy and expensive legal battle.
The lawsuit centered on claims that female employees, particularly in engineering roles, faced hurdles in career advancement. The California Civil Rights Department alleges that qualified women were passed over for promotions in favor of their male colleagues.
This alleged favoritism created a hostile work environment where women felt undervalued and discouraged from pursuing leadership roles.
The lawsuit also highlighted instances of sexual harassment faced by female employees. It further alleges retaliation, including negative performance reviews and termination, when women reported these incidents. These accusations paint a troubling picture of a company culture that failed to protect its female employees.
As part of the settlement, Snapchat will undergo significant reforms. An independent consultant will review its compensation and promotion practices to ensure fairness. Additionally, the company will implement external monitoring to ensure compliance with policies on sexual harassment, retaliation, and discrimination.
Mandatory training sessions for all employees will address preventing discrimination, retaliation, and sexual harassment. Snapchat has also committed to providing clear reporting channels for employees to raise concerns without fear of reprisal.
The California Civil Rights Department director, Kevin Kish, emphasized the importance of this settlement. He stressed the need for equal opportunities for women in all industries and roles. This settlement serves as a step towards fostering a more inclusive and supportive work environment at Snapchat, ensuring all employees have the chance to thrive.
