Tamayo Perry, a beloved actor known for his roles in the Pirates of the Caribbean franchise and Hawaii Five-0, tragically passed away on Sunday, June 23rd, 2024, after he was attacked by a shark while he was surfing at Malaekahana Beach in Oahu, Hawaii. He was 49 years old.

Perry, who is known to also work as a lifeguard for the City and County of Honolulu Ocean Safety department since 2016, was surfing off the North Shore of Oahu when the incident occurred around 1 PM.

Emergency services responded to a call reporting a shark attack, and Perry was retrieved from the water by paramedics using a jet ski. Despite their efforts, he was pronounced dead at the scene, having suffered severe injuries from the attack.

Honolulu Ocean Safety acting chief Kurt Lager described Perry as a globally recognized figure, particularly in Oahu’s North Shore, where he was cherished by all.

Lager emphasized Perry’s infectious personality and deep love for others, expressing condolences to his family. Mayor Rick Blangiardi mourned Perry’s passing, highlighting his legendary status as a waterman and his significant contribution to the ocean safety team.

In addition to his acting roles, Perry was a professional surfer known worldwide for his skills in the water. He had appeared in several films, including Pirates of the Caribbean:

On Stranger Tides, Blue Crush, and Charlie’s Angels: Full Throttle, as well as TV shows such as Hawaii Five-0 and Lost. Perry’s wife, Emilia, who has acted in films like Soul Surfer and Battleship, survives him.

The tragic incident has once again brought attention to the risks associated with shark attacks, despite their rarity. According to the 2023 International Shark Attack File by the Florida Museum of Natural History, there were only 69 unprovoked shark attacks worldwide that year, resulting in 10 fatalities. While shark attacks can be sensationalized in the media, it is crucial to remember that they remain uncommon occurrences.

The loss of Tamayo Perry has deeply affected the community in Oahu, where he was known for his kindness, talent, and love for the ocean. As the world mourns the passing of this remarkable individual, it is essential to celebrate his life and the positive impact he had on those around him.
