Tragic Shooting at Brown University: Manhunt Underway Providence, Rhode Island

Authorities report that the shooter, described as a male dressed in black, opened fire around 4 p.m. ET and fled on foot. As of late Saturday night, the suspect remains at large, prompting an ongoing manhunt involving local, state, and federal law enforcement, including the FBI. A shelter-in-place order was issued for the campus and surrounding areas, with students instructed to lock doors and remain indoors overnight in some cases.

Brown University President Christina Paxson called it a “deeply tragic day,” confirming the victims were primarily students. Providence Mayor Brett Smiley and police officials provided updates, noting shell casings were recovered but no weapon or clear motive has been identified yet. Surveillance footage of a person of interest has been released, showing an individual walking away from the area.

The shooting has reignited national debates on gun violence, campus safety, and security measures, especially as Brown is known as a gun-free zone with strict policies prohibiting firearms. The Brown community, along with the nation, mourns the loss and awaits further developments in the investigation. Support resources have been mobilized for students and families affected.
