Trump Backs Louisiana Law Mandating Ten Commandments in Classrooms / private and Public schools

Former President Donald Trump has expressed his support for Louisiana’s new law requiring public and private schools to prominently display the Ten Commandments in classrooms. The law, signed by Governor Jeff Landry, aims to promote religious values and is the first of its kind in the United States.

Trump’s Endorsement: Trump praised the law on his online platform Truth Social, stating, “I LOVE THE TEN COMMANDMENTS IN PUBLIC SCHOOLS, PRIVATE SCHOOLS, AND MANY OTHER PLACES, FOR THAT MATTER. READ IT — HOW CAN WE, AS A NATION, GO WRONG??? THIS MAY BE, IN FACT, THE FIRST MAJOR STEP IN THE REVIVAL OF RELIGION, WHICH IS DESPERATELY NEEDED, IN OUR COUNTRY.”

The law, House Bill 71, was passed by the Louisiana Legislature and signed by Governor Landry on June 21, 2024. It mandates that schools display the Ten Commandments in a prominent location.

Critics, including the American Civil Liberties Union (ACLU) and the Freedom From Religion Foundation, have vowed to challenge the law in court, calling it “blatantly unconstitutional.”

The White House and the Department of Education have not commented on the law or Trump’s endorsement. President Biden, a devout Catholic, has not publicly addressed the issue.

Religious Freedom: The law is seen as a step towards promoting religious values in public schools. Critics argue that it violates the separation of church and state, while supporters see it as a way to promote moral values.

The Ten Commandments have been a subject of controversy in the United States, particularly in public spaces. In 2005, the Supreme Court ruled in Van Orden v. Perry that the display of the Ten Commandments on the Texas State Capitol grounds did not violate the First Amendment.

The law reflects the deep political divisions in the United States, particularly on issues related to religion and public spaces. The Biden administration has not taken a stance on the law, while Trump has publicly endorsed it.
