An off-duty Florida deputy “jokingly” shot and killed aa fellow deputy after pointed his gun at a him thinking the weapon was unloaded.
Brevard County Sheriff Wayne Ivey said in a video address on Sunday that Brevard County Sheriff’s Office Deputy Austin Walsh suffered a single gunshot wound by his room mate Brevard County Deputy Andrew Lawson on the early hours of Saturday at his Palm Bay home.
according to the report, the duo had been playing online games and were taking when talking as they were taking a break, when Lawson allegedly pointed his firearm at Walsh and shot him, in what Ivey called an “extremely dumb and totally avoidable accident.”
County Sheriff Ivey said Lawson went ahead to called 911 requesting help, but Walsh 23, was believed to have died immediately from his injuries.
According to Ivey “Austin and Andrew were the best of friends and Andrew is completely devastated over what happened. Even with that, there is no excuse for this tragic and totally avoidable death.”
Lawson has since been arrested on a no-bond warrant issued by the Florida Department of Law Enforcement for manslaughter with a firearm.
