Florida Pastor Jonathan Elwing Arrested for Possession of Child Sexual Abuse Images

Jonathan Edward Elwing, the 43-year-old senior pastor of Palm View Baptist Church in Palmetto, Florida, has been arrested for possessing images of children being sexually abused. 

According to the Manatee County Sheriff’s Office, a search of Elwing’s home and the church on June 21, 2024 uncovered four “sexually explicit photos of children” on his cellphone. Investigators also found that Elwing had used cryptocurrency to purchase the illegal material online. 

Elwing resigned from his position at the church prior to his arrest. He has been charged with four counts of possession of child pornography. 

The sheriff’s office is urging anyone with information about potential crimes involving Elwing to come forward, either by contacting the department directly or through the Manatee County Crime Stoppers program. 

This case has drawn widespread condemnation, as Elwing was a trusted religious leader in the community who allegedly exploited and abused vulnerable children. 

The arrest of a pastor on such serious charges has shaken the local Baptist community and raised questions about the need for stronger safeguards and oversight within religious institutions. 

Experts note that the use of cryptocurrency to purchase child sexual abuse material is a growing trend, as it provides an additional layer of anonymity for offenders. Law enforcement agencies are working to combat this emerging threat. 

The investigation into Elwing’s activities is ongoing, and authorities have not ruled out the possibility of additional charges or the involvement of other individuals.
