Hastings attended Buckingham Browne & Nichols School and later went on to study at Bowdoin College in Brunswick, Maine, where he graduated with a bachelor’s degree in mathematics.

Career Beginnings

After completing college, Hastings joined the Peace Corps and served in Swaziland, where he taught high school mathematics. This experience greatly influenced his views on education and later played a role in his vision for Netflix’s educational initiatives.

In 1991, Hastings founded his first company, Pure Software, which provided tools for software developers. Pure Software went public in 1995 and later merged with Atria Software, before being acquired by Rational Software in 1997.
