Harry Maguire scores late, extra-time winner as Manchester United beat Norwich to reach FA Cup semi-finals

Harry Maguire scored a 118th-minute goal to propel Manchester United into the FA Cup semi-finals with a 2-1 triumph at Norwich on Saturday.

Odion Ighalo gave Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s side the lead on 51 minutes before Todd Cantwell took the game to extra time with 15 minutes to go.

The additional period consisted of constant United pressure, which took its toll on the ten-man Canaries who had Tim Klose sent off.

Given there was a semi-final spot up for grabs, there was precious little intensity and drive from either side in a desperate first half at Carrow Road.

Neither side managed to register a shot on target, with Norwich having the best chance just as the first half came to a close.

Lukas Rupp played in after impressive work by Cantwell, with Maguire producing a crucial block before Luke Shaw denied Buendia’s follow-up and Cantwell blazed over.

Neither side made a change at the break but United needed just six minutes to make the breakthrough.

Luke Shaw made room down the left and cross for Juan Mata, whose deflect effort looped up in the air Ighalo swivelled to direct past Norwich goalkeeper Tim Krul.

Jesse Lingard saw a shot blocked as the game opened up a bit, before Solskjaer turned to Marcus Rashford, Mason Greenwood and Brandon Williams in a bid to put the tie to bed.

United were looking confident and Norwich sent a warning shot in the 70th minute, when Alexander Tettey met a free-kick with a header inadvertently blocked by team-mate Ben Godfrey.

It was a warning the visitors failed to heed.

Cantwell was Norwich’s standout player and levelled from 25 yards, with his 75th-minute strike beating Sergio Romero down low to his left.

Norwich were in the ascendancy after their leveller, but their hopes received a major setback when Timm Klose grabbed hold of Ighalo to prevent the striker going through on goal from Fernandes’ inspired flick.

The Switzerland defender was handed a straight red card by Jon Moss, but the hosts held on for extra-time after Krul denied Paul Pogba and fellow substitute Greenwood in quick succession.

United snatched victory two minutes before the end of extra time when Maguire swept home from close range.

Pogba’s delivery in from the left caused panic in the Norwich defence and the ball eventually dropped to the England centre-half to fire home from six yards out to earn United a 2-1 win.
